The other day I heard Frannie Kelley’s enlivening piece, A Eulogy For The Boombox, on NPR and felt so inspired to have music around me (that doesn’t come from a computer) that I promptly went down to my basement to dust off the old portable record player.
I set up the little gem in my guest room (after all guests need music too) and listened intently to one of my favorite albums. Yeah, I was jamming. Blasting stellar music through the tiny crap tin-sounding speaker I thought, who needs a stereo when I can plug in this record player and play vinyl anytime, anywhere?! I was riding the wave and feeling cool.

One of my best friends recently turned to me in the middle of a conversation and said: “I swear, Maria, I’ve never known anyone as cool AND as uncool as you are.”
This might have been the best compliment I have ever been given but aside from that, 'cool and uncool' is just how I have been feeling about this little record player.
Cool and uncool … aren’t we all in one way or another?
